The City of Toronto, Options for Homes and Home Ownership Alternatives joined together today to celebrate World Habitat Day, which the United Nations marks on the first Monday of October each year. Toronto issued a proclamation and joined Options for Homes and Home Ownership Alternatives for a flag-raising ceremony on Toronto City Hall's podium roof.  

 

World Habitat Day is intended to draw attention to the state of towns and cities and the basic right of all to adequate shelter. It serves as a reminder that everyone has the power and the responsibility to shape the future of urban areas. World Habitat Day was established in 1985 by the United Nations General Assembly and first celebrated in 1986.

 

"It's very fitting that we join together to celebrate this special day," said Erik Hunter of the City's Affordable Housing Office. "We work very successfully with Options for Homes and Home Ownership Alternatives to provide affordable home ownership opportunities."

 

"The Options for Homes/Home Ownership Alternatives housing model is celebrating 20 years of creating affordable ownership housing," said founder and President Michel Labbé. "The Options/HOA housing model has provided more than 6,500 families with incomes as low as $20,000 the chance to own their own homes in Toronto, across Canada, and abroad." 

 

Toronto works in partnership with the federal and provincial governments and the private and voluntary sectors on a range of initiatives that provide affordable rental and ownership opportunities.
