Changes to Toronto's Eglinton Avenue East HOV lanes

August 29, 2014

Starting September 2, the City of Toronto is changing the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane restrictions along Eglinton Avenue East between Leslie Street and Cedar Drive, east of Markham Road. Currently, passenger vehicles carrying three or more passengers are permitted to use the HOV lanes. With the new change, vehicles carrying two or more passengers will now be permitted to use these lanes.

The Toronto Police Service will enforce the new regulation after signage indicating the change is modified during the first week of September.

The HOV lanes will continue to benefit TTC buses, taxicabs, motorcycles and bicycles. The HOV lanes are in effect Monday to Friday, with the exception of public holidays, during morning and afternoon peak periods (7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.). During peak periods, non-HOV traffic is permitted to drive in the HOV lanes within 45 metres of an intersection or driveway for the purpose of accessing or exiting an intersecting road or driveway.

This change is being made to improve traffic flow along this busy corridor. Over the next year, City staff will monitor traffic operations on this section of Eglinton Avenue East, and will use the findings to inform the development of a citywide strategy on the HOV network's operations and regulations.
