The 20th annual National Aboriginal Day, hosted by the City of Toronto and the Toronto Aboriginal City Celebration Committee, began this morning with a sunrise ceremony and flag raising at the Toronto City Hall podium roof.

 

Elder Cat Criger led the ceremony, which was followed by a flag-raising ceremony at which Councillor Mike Layton, (Ward 19 Trinity-Spadina), Chair of the Aboriginal Affairs Advisory Committee, read the proclamation for National Aboriginal Day in Toronto.

 

“On June 21, Toronto joins cities across the country in celebrating National Aboriginal Day,” said Councillor Layton. “Today we recognize and celebrate the culture, heritage and significant contributions of the First Peoples to our city and to Canadian society.”

 

A reception was held for the participants following the sunrise ceremony and flag raising. 

 

The City of Toronto and the Toronto Aboriginal City Celebration Committee are hosting related events that continue until June 26. More information is available at http://www.toronto.ca/diversity.
