Last weekend's closure of the Gardiner Expressway enabled the City of Toronto to complete a significant amount of work in advance of the winter season.

 

Statistically, the work completed included the following: 

• 13,200 square metres of road surface grinding and 38,400 square metres of road resurface paving on 6.2 lane kilometres of roadway (eastbound and westbound between Bathurst Street and Exhibition Place and on the eastbound curb lane and shoulder between Highway 427 and the express/collector split) completed • 29,000 metres of crack sealing completed • 1,100 metres of concrete barrier wall removed and replaced • 560 potholes filled • 45 asphalt core tests conducted • 17 bridges chipped • 80 metres of guiderail repaired • 3 crash systems repaired and a new crash system at Kipling Avenue installed • 335 tonnes of debris removed • 190 curb-kilometres of roadway flushed and swept • 1,790 catch basins cleaned and flushed • 10 tonnes of logs and wood chipped • 100 streetlights re-lamped and a high mast installed after 600 light inspections conducted • 240 signs including overhead signs inspected, maintained and repaired • 36 new exit ramp signs installed • 11,650 metres of line painting completed • 25 variable message sign (VMS) site assessments completed • 20 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras inspected • 46 equipment cabinet upgrades completed, and • 13 hectares of grass cut. 

 

The City's Transportation Services, Engineering and Construction Services, Parks, Forestry & Recreation, Solid Waste Management Services and Toronto Water, along with Toronto Hydro, worked together to co-ordinate their work and operations over the weekend to improve efficiency and minimize disruption.

 

The City appreciated the public's co-operation during the weekend closure of the Gardiner Expressway, which was required to keep the parkway in a safe, operable condition for the 120,000 to 140,000 motorists who use it on a daily basis or on weekends. 

 

This work was part of the City's comprehensive, co-ordinated strategy to rehabilitate and upgrade Toronto's roads, transit and underground infrastructure for current and future needs.
