Mayor Tory announces the winners of his Black History Month writing contest for youth

February 23, 2016

At a Black History Month reception today, Mayor John Tory announced the winners of his first creative writing contest for young people. The contest was launched to help celebrate Black History Month and was open to youth 11 to 17 years of age, who were asked to share a story about black Torontonians, past or present, who have contributed to Toronto’s diverse heritage and identity.

"There were so many inspiring stories submitted that celebrated the rich African-Canadian history that has helped build our city. I am impressed with the talent of Toronto's young people and I'm especially impressed with their insight of the legacy of black Torontonians,” said Mayor Tory. “Canadians of all backgrounds should know and celebrate the contributions and achievements African Canadians have made and continue to make, whether it’s in education, art, culture, public service, business, politics or human rights.”

Each winner was presented with a scroll and a plaque.
