Toronto site animated by new Eldon Garnet sculpture

February 12, 2016

Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam (Ward 27 Toronto Centre-Rosedale) today officially opened a new, large-scale public sculpture by multidisciplinary Toronto artist Eldon Garnet. His work, called Artifacts of Memory, consists of five lines of text on interconnected metal girders.

"This artwork creatively animates a prominent street by engaging the public intellectually and physically," said Councillor Wong-Tam.

"This work is a critical and humorous take on the underlying existential worries of everyday life and a captivating comment on the human condition," said Garnet.

Located at 5 St. Joseph St. (at Yonge Street), the work was donated to the City by Graywood Developments and Mod Developments. The public art consultant was Art Strategies Inc.

Garnet's work becomes part of the City's permanent Public Art and Monuments Collection. The City of Toronto's collection has 205 public artworks and monuments located throughout the city.

Garnet is a public sculptor, photo-based artist and writer based in Toronto. He is the artist of the public sculpture, The Memorial to Commemorate the Chinese Railroad Workers in Canada. His work has been exhibited extensively in North America and Europe. Midcareer surveys of his photographic work have been held at the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and the Amsterdam Center of Photography. For 15 years, he was the editor of IMPULSE, an international magazine of art, fashion and ideas.
