City of Toronto honoured with United Way's top award

January 28, 2016

The City of Toronto is the recipient of United Way Toronto & York Region's highest award – the Spirit of Community Award – as announced at a campaign recognition event held last night. The Spirit of Community award was proudly accepted by City Manager Peter Wallace and the Campaign Co-Patrons, Deputy City Manager John Livey and Maureen O'Reilly, President of the Toronto Public Library Workers Union.

"This award recognizes not just the hard work of the Toronto Public Service in serving residents but also its enthusiasm for giving back to the community it serves," said Mayor John Tory. β€œThe dedication by the Toronto Public Service to the United Way campaign will help hundreds of thousands of people by creating opportunities for youth, building strong neighbourhoods and helping newcomers get settled in Toronto.”

"Our campaign was made successful by the dedication and support of 1,000 volunteers and our unions and associations," said Wallace. "Together, we were able to set a new fundraising record for the City and raise $1.609 million to support our community."

The Spirit of Community Award recognizes an organization from either the public or private sector that exemplifies community support through its exceptional overall partnerships with United Way. This is the first time the City of Toronto has won the award. The City's 2015 employee campaign included 250 special events supported by 68 co-ordinators and more than 1,000 ambassadors and volunteers.
