Fire Code violations at fatal fire on Toronto's Vinci Crescent

November 26, 2015

On November 22, 2015, a fire took place in a multi-unit dwelling on Vinci Crescent in the city's northwest area. Sadly, the homeowner perished in the basement.

Toronto Fire Services and the provincial Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management promptly conducted an investigation of this $40,000, two-alarm fire. During the post-fire inspection, Fire Prevention Inspectors noted the building was divided into multiple units and numerous violations to the Fire Code regarding smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, fire separations and continuous/unobstructed exits from the premises.

Had the fire not claimed the homeowner's life, charges would have been laid as is typically done in scenarios such as this.

Violations of the Fire Code are serious public safety concerns and charges can be initiated in the Provincial Offences Court. The penalties for Fire Code violations run up to $50,000 and/or a year in jail for individuals and up to $100,000 for a corporation.
