No fall maintenance closure for Gardiner Expressway this year

November 10, 2015

The City of Toronto will not require a full closure of the Gardiner Expressway for annual maintenance work this year.

"Through ongoing co-ordination of construction work and road closures in the city, we’re able to do the maintenance work that usually occurs with the annual fall closure of the Gardiner during other times in conjunction with other projects," said Mayor John Tory. "This means the City can keep the expressway open during the fall this year. The Gardiner is a major artery of our city and keeping lanes of traffic on the Gardiner open makes a real difference in cutting congestion."

The City's Transportation Services division, in conjunction with other divisions and agencies, routinely needs to undertake full weekend closures of the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway to perform maintenance activities such as road resurfacing, clearing catch basins, bridge inspections, overhead sign inspection and repair, and maintenance of closed circuit TV cameras.

Some of that maintenance work will be completed during other closures in the future. Transportation Services reviews its requirements closely and undertakes full closures only when necessary to expedite the work and ensure public safety.

The maintenance work is part of the City's comprehensive, co-ordinated strategy to rehabilitate and upgrade Toronto's roads, transit and underground infrastructure for current and future needs.
