A StreetARToronto (StART) mural was unveiled today at Keele Street north of Bloor Street which highlights the unique character of the High Park area.
The mural was created by local artists and brothers Rob and Tommy Matejka. It features a subdued colour palette and layering that gives the artwork a dynamic quality, while the size and scale invite the community's daily commute – whether by TTC, bike, car or on foot – to become part of the viewers' experience of the artwork.
"This subtle yet striking mural provides a welcoming and tranquil setting in this busy commuter underpass and showcases the artistic hub that is blossoming in Parkdale-High Park," said Councillor Sarah Doucette (Ward 13 Parkdale-High Park).
Launched in 2012, StART is a program of Transportation Services' Public Realm Section. It is an innovative, public-private partnership designed to develop, support, promote and increase awareness of street art and its ability to beautify the city's visual landscape. StART’s Underpass Program provides opportunities for artists to create works of art that contribute to the program mandate; make walking, cycling or driving through Toronto's underpasses more appealing; and strengthen the sense of place, inclusion and belonging within communities.
Tommy Matejka is a Toronto based artist. His vision incorporates his experiences through the various mediums of his work and continues to evolve into a forward interpretation of the world around him. He has exhibited in Toronto and New York. Rob Matejka has come to value the arts as a medium for inspiration and positive social intervention. His career animates both the communities and people he works with and attempts to make the arts accessible to everyone through arts programming, mentoring and adding to the growing outdoor public gallery.
