Toronto Fire Services zero tolerance toward Ontario Fire Code violations

October 20, 2015

Toronto Fire Services crews responded to a near fatal fire at 1169 Danforth Ave. on September 29. A serious injury was sustained by an occupant. An inspection of the building found Ontario Fire Code violations that included a non-operational fire alarm system and smoke alarms missing in some units.

Toronto Fire Services has a zero tolerance policy toward Ontario Fire Code violations and will be laying charges pursuant to the Fire Protection and Prevention Act.

Toronto Fire Services is proactive in reducing risk through fire prevention and enforcement strategies against owners who fail to meet the Ontario Fire Code and jeopardize the safety of individuals. A Toronto rooming house fire at 73 Humber College Blvd. on March 6, 2011 led to a significant criminal conviction of three years in jail, plus $26,100 in restitution. The owner was found guilty of criminal negligence causing death, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, and four counts of criminal mischief. The Fire Code charges resulted in total fines of $25,000.

Toronto Fire Services reminds landlords and tenants they can contact the Fire Prevention division to request an inspection by calling 416-338-9107. Should a fire occur, non-compliance with the Ontario Fire Code will result in legal action.
