At its meeting today, Toronto City Council appointed Peter Wallace as Toronto's City Manager, effective July 13. The City Manager is the most senior official in the City's administrative structure and is accountable to City Council for the policies and programs delivered by members of the Toronto Public Service.

 

"Peter Wallace is a highly respected individual with extensive experience in public policy and governance," said Mayor John Tory. "As City Manager, Peter will play a significant role in maintaining public confidence in the City of Toronto and ensuring that the City continues to provide excellent programs and services."

 

Wallace takes over the position from Joe Pennachetti, appointed as City Manager in 2008. Pennachetti is retiring from the position effective May 8. Deputy City Manager John Livey will act as City Manager between May 9 and July 12.

 

"On behalf of City Council, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Joe Pennachetti for his tireless effort and dedication in his role as City Manager," said Mayor Tory. "He has been an advocate for the implementation of sustainable budgeting practices that has helped strengthen Toronto’s financial plan. In his six years as City Manager, he has inspired a dedicated and engaged public service.”

 

As the new City Manager, Wallace will be responsible for providing guidance and advice to Council and the City administration on city-wide issues, co-ordinating the work of City divisions and evaluating how well the City provides services to the public.

 

Wallace is currently the Ontario Public Service Visiting Fellow at the School of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Toronto. He began his public service career with the Government of Ontario in 1981 and over more than 32 years established a legacy of distinguished leadership. He served as Secretary to Cabinet and Head of the Ontario Public Service in addition to Deputy Minister of Finance and Secretary to Treasury Board. Other senior positions include Deputy Minister of Energy and Associate Secretary of Cabinet and Deputy Minister, Policy.
